The Municipality of Montescudo will save 52.3% on electricity and maintenance costs thanks to the adoption of a smart system for public lighting of the territory. The town, with 3303 inhabitants on the hills of Rimini, is not the first in Italy to take the smart road, but it stands out among the smaller towns and is the first of its kind in Valconca. While a Smau Milan (17 - 19 October) Digital Agenda is Smart Cities are the dominant theme, it is worth mentioning also this small (but significant) testimony.
The Mayor of Montescudo, Ruggero Gozzi, who first believed in this project, explains: "Thanks to the use of remote management equipment, we will be able to achieve overall savings in terms of energy and maintenance of the 52,3%. Technological innovation will thus help to drastically reduce energy costs and make it possible to reduce management costs for maintenance ".
The technology adopted in Montescudo is that of the company UMPI, founded in Italy in 1982, specialized in the creation of intelligent systems for the remote management of public lighting and of smart grid, world leader in powerline technologies. A tricolor company of the green economy that plans to close 2012 with an increase in turnover of around 50 million euros.
The territory of Montescudo has been made entirely "intelligent" thanks to a project by efficiency and energy saving on public lighting based on conveyed wave technology. The Minos system UMPI is able to transform the existing electricity network into high-speed data networks without installing new cabling. The city's 929 street lamps and 25 power booths are now capable of passing audio and video signals at very high speed, delivering numerous services additional.
The video surveillance system is already active, while by connecting additional equipment without having to build new infrastructures, it will be possible to have new services related to sustainable mobility, safety and control on the territory, connectivity and air quality monitoring. Furthermore, thanks to the possibility of modulating the supply of light according to needs, consumption has been significantly reduced.
