Few lights and many shadows onair pollution in Italy, a cause of mortality and hospitalization among the population more than we think. The smog problem it is serious but the actions are weak, so it is necessary to make serious reasoning and take a stand, even by signing the petition promoted by ParentsAntiSmog (the link at the bottom of the article), so that Europe requires our country to comply at least with EU rules. Especially after the condemnation of Italy by the European Court of Justice in December 2012.

A first figure. According to 2013 OECD Report on the Environment in Italy, the atmospheric emissions of pollutants they decreased in our country more than in most of the other OECD members, however more than half of the 30 most polluted European cities are in Italy.

A second figure. In 2010, the latest data available, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were 6.2% lower than the 1990 level, compared to the target of Kyoto Protocol to reduce emissions by 6.5% in the period 2008-2012 (consider that the reduction includes the absorption of GHG by forests and the sudden drop in emissions due to the economic crisis).

Why is this important? If Italy and the Regions respected the rules and limits on air pollutants every year in our country we would save thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of hospitalizations caused byexposure to pollutants.

Risks and consequences. Scientific literature and epidemiological data indicate that the levels of pollutants to which a large part of the Italian population is exposed cause the onset or aggravation of numerous diseases and pathologies: asthma, allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart attacks, ischemias, diabetes, tumors, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, reduced fertility, low birth weight, negative effects on the neurological development of children and on the cognitive functions of children and the elderly.

Yet for years almost nothing has been done to fall within the limits. Citizens, however, have an instrument: to demand the opening of a new infringement procedure for the violation of European regulations which, after the aforementioned conviction of Italy by the European Court of Justice in December 2012, forces Italy all necessary measures to address this serious problem.
